Asian Games Basketball: Gilas Opens Versus Qatar

The Philippine men's national basketball team will open it's 17th Asian Games quarterfinals schedule as they face-off against a familiar opponent in Qatar 5:30 p.m. Manila time today at the Hwaseong Sports Complex, the top team in Group F after the preliminary round. The Philippines finished second in Group E behind Asian powerhouse Iran.


Qatar and the Philippine side have played each other several times in the past and here is a summary of their head-to-head match-ups.

2013 FIBA Asia Championships Preliminary Round

In a Group E preliminary round game of the 27th FIBA Asia Championships in Manila last year, the Philippines subdued Qatar, 80-70. Marcus Douthit dominated with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Naturalized player Jarvis Hayes led Qatar with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

2012 FIBA Asia Cup Battle for Bronze

In the 4th FIBA Asia Cup at Tokyo, Japan, Qatar beat the Philippines in the game for 3rd place via a 79-63 rout helped by a 4th quarter breakaway. This game took place at the Ota Gymnasium in Tokyo on September 22, 2012. Qatari forward Mohd Mohamed stepped up in the absence of Yasseen Musa with 17 points and 9 rebounds spiked by 4 triples. Naturalized Qatari Clinton Johnson III added 16 points, wing player Khaild Suliman Abdi had 3 long bombs to finish with 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while big man Erfan Saeed finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus Douthit led the Filipinos with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Gary David added 15, Dillinger had 12 and Norwood put up 10. In that game, the Pinoy dribblers shot poorly from outside(2/18 3 point conversion) and was largely outrebounded(47-31).

2011 Friendly Game

The Philippines wins over Qatar 69-52 on August 9, 2011 in Manila. Jimmy Alapag had 11 points and Ranidel de Ocampo added 9 for the Philippines.

2010 Asian Games Battle for 5th Place

In the classification match to determine 5th place, Qatar got back at the Philippines with an 81-71 victory at the Ying Dong Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China on November 26, 2010. Targuy Ngombo led Qatar with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Kelly Williams led the scoring for the Philippines with 20 points while Asi Taulava had 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

2010 Asian Games Preliminary Round

Philippines walloped Qatar, 90-68 at the Guangzhou Asian Games in a preliminary round played on November 17, 2010 at the Huangpu Gymnasium, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. JV Casio finished with 22 points and 5 assists in that game.

2010 FIBA Stankovic Cup Battle for Bronze

In the bronze medal match of the 2010 FIBA Stankovic Cup in Beirut, Lebanon, Qatar again edged the Philippines, 80-75 on Targuy Ngombo's 28 points and 7 rebounds. Mac Baracael had 21 points for the Pinoys.

2010 FIBA Stankovic Cup Group B Preliminary Round

Qatar wins over the Philippines, 66-61 on August 10, 2010 at the Ghazir Club Court in Beirut, Lebanon. The controversial Targuy Ngombo finished that game with 29 points and 9 boards. He was ably helped by Ali Turki Ali's 12 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Tiu and Marcio Lassiter each had 11 points for the Philippines. Qatar dominated the boards, 58-34 and the paint 32 points to 16 points.

2009 FIBA Asia Championships Classification Round

Qatar shellacked the Philippines in a classification round match at the 2009 FIBA Asia Championships in Tianjin, China on a game played at Tianjin Arena on August 15, 2010. Abdurahman Saad led Qatar with 23 points and was ably helped by Mohammad Saleem Abdullah's 11 points and 12 boards and Mustafa El Sayyad's 13 points and 12 boards. Kerby Raymundo led the Filipinos with 12 points.
