PBA Season 40 Validates Player Development Effect of Gilas

Inclusion in the Gilas program has a very solid impact on player development. If it were any indication, statistics for the 40th season of the Philippine Basketball Association validates this.

4 out of the top 5 local scorers in PBA Season 40 were part of the Gilas team that played in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain and the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. The PBA Season 40 scoring champion is Globalport spark plug Terrence Romeo(19.66 PPG) who was not part of Gilas, but 2nd to 5th leading scorers are Jayson Castro(18.21 PPG), June Mar Fajardo(17.41 PPG), Paul Lee(15.55 PPG), and Ranidel de Ocampo(15.06). While Terrence Romeo has played only 35 games this season, the 4 Gilas players have logged in more than 45 games each.

Rebounding

June Mar Fajardo led the league in rebounding this past season, his 12.91 per game rebounding average topping even the average of all imports. Japeth Aguilar is 5th best among locals with 7.64 boards per contest while Marc Pingris was 6th-best with 7.19 caroms an outing. Rounding up the top 10 for league leading local rebounders is Ranidel De Ocampo with 5.77 rebounds a game.

Gilas point guards Jayson Castro, LA Tenorio, and Paul Lee all figured in the top 10 local assists leaders in PBA Season 40. Jayson Castro was 2nd overall(including imports) with 5.15 dimes a contest, LA Tenorio was 7th among locals with 3.89 dishes a game, and Paul Lee rounds up the top 10 with 3.26 assists a game.

LA Tenorio was 2nd in steals per game among locals in PBA Season 40 with 1.49 takeaways per contest while Jayson Castro was 8th with 1.19 interceptions a game.

Blocked Shots

Only import Marcus Blakely has a better blocks per game average than June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar. Fajardo swats 1.74 shots a game while Japeth Aguilar returns 1.48 attempts a contest this past PBA season.

3-point Shooting Percentage

Eight Gilas players made at least 30% of their long distance attempts in the PBA this past season. Jayson Castro topped the league in 3-point shooting percentage with 41.6%, Ranidel De Ocampo was 2nd among locals with 40.2%, Paul Lee was 4th at 39.5%, and Larry Fonacier was 7th with 35.2%. LA Tenorio hit 33.3%, Gary David made 32.7%, while both Gabe Norwood and Jeff Chan sniped at 32.3%. Note also that before he retired, Jimmy Alapag shot a 48.5% clip from threes in the Philippine Cup to lead all players while Jared Dillinger led the sniping in the season-ending Governors' Cup with a 58.8% shooting percentage.

Total Field Goal Percentage

Three of the top 10 in total field goal percentage were part of the 2014 Philippine Team to the FIBA World Cup in Spain. June Mar Fajardo tops the field at 58.9%, Marc Pingris is 3rd-best with 53.8%, while Japeth Aguilar is top 8 with 52.1%.

Player Efficiency Rating

Five out of the ten most efficient players in the PBA this past season were part of Gilas in 2013-2014: June Mar Fajardo(1st), Jayson Castro(3rd), Ranidel De Ocampo(8th), Paul Lee(9th), and Japeth Aguilar(10th).

Season Awards 

Three of the PBA Season 40's First Mythical Team members are Gilas mainstays: Paul Lee, Jayson Castro, and the season's Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo. Another Gilas stalwart, Ranidel De Ocampo, was named to the Mythical Second Team. Gabe Norwood and June Mar Fajardo were also named to the All-Defensive Team. The Best Player of the Conference awardees were Gilas mainstays,  Jayson Castro who won the BPC in the Commissioner's Cup and June Mar Fajardo who won the BPC award in the Philippine Cup and the Governors' Cup. Of the 3 Finals MVP, only Arwind Santos was not part of Gilas. Ranidel De Ocampo won Finals MVP in the Commissioner's Cup while June Mar Fajardo was Finals MVP in the Governors' Cup.

Team Success

With the exception of Barangay Ginebra, all teams with a 2013-2014 Gilas player in the roster made it at least to one semifinal this season. And of all the teams that made it to any of the semifinals in the three conferences, only the Alaska Aces di not have a 2013-2014 Gilas player on their roster.
